Grimskunk is a Canadian punk rock band formed in Montreal, Quebec, in the fall of 1988. Alain Vadeboncoeur, Franz Schuller, Joe Evil, Marc-Boris Saint-Maurice and Peter Edwards are the original members. The band's name is an allusion to skunk, a variety of cannabis. Their debut album Autumn Flowers was released in April 1991, produced with the help of Groovy guitarist Aardvark. In 1992, he released the Exotic Blend EP and produced two music videos for the songs "Bugs in Billy Bob's Bed" and " Perestroiska " using a hand-held camera. In 1997, GrimSkunk and their manager Simon Galipeault founded Indica Records, which promotes the DIY (Do It Yourself) philosophy and fosters Quebec's local underground scene. Bassist Marc-Boris Saint-Maurice left the band in 1999 to enter provincial and federal politics, and was replaced by Tod Wirschem. The band took a break in 2000 after keyboardist Joe Evil was badly burned in an apartment fire. In 2001, the band released Grim Skunk Plays... Fatal Illness as a tribute to the hardcore band Fatal Illness, from which some Grimskunk members originate. In 2004, Vincent Peake, a member of Groovy Aardvark, became the band's bassist following the departure of Tod Wirschem. On March 15, 2009, drummer Alain Vadeboncoeur takes part in his last show with the band before leaving it and being replaced by Ben Shatskoff, who returns in 2021. Despite the fact that the band aims to go international with an emphasis on English-language songs on their records, they always save room to insert French-language songs on them, in a bid to retain their Quebec roots.
