Founded in 1996 in Chicago by José Luis Terrazas, Grupo Montéz de Durango quickly became a defining force in the duranguense genre, blending traditional Mexican music with polka rhythms. Their 2002 album El Sube y Baja achieved platinum status, featuring hits like "Las Mismas Piedras" and "Hoy Empieza Mi Tristeza." The 2003 release De Durango a Chicago solidified their success, selling over a million copies. In 2005, Y Sigue La Mata Dando topped charts in both the U.S. and Mexico, with the lead single "Lágrimas de Cristal" penned by Juan Gabriel. Despite lineup changes in 2005, the group continued to thrive, releasing Borrón y Cuenta Nueva in 2006, which also reached number 1 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. Their influence extended beyond music, popularizing the "Pasito Duranguense" dance style. Over the years, they've garnered multiple awards, including Premios Lo Nuestro and Billboard Latin Music Awards, and have maintained a dynamic presence in the Latin music scene through releases like Cerrando Trato (2010), De Vuelta a la Sierra (2016), Sin Cambiar el Estilo (2020), El Despegue, Vol. 1 (2024), and El Despegue, Vol. 2 (2024). In 2025, their single "Sorry," recorded alongside La Maquinaria Norteña, reached the Top 40 of the Regional Mexican chart.
