Formed in Heidelberg, Germany in 1968, Guru Guru is a krautrock band founded by drummer Mani Neumeier (born in Munich, Germany on December 31, 1940), bassist Uli Trepte, and guitarist Eddy Naegeli. Originally called The Guru Guru Groove, the group would soon replace Eddy Naegeli with American guitarist Jim Kennedy, who was then replaced by Axel Genrich. This ‘classic’ line-up of the re-christened Guru Guru released their debut album, UFO, in 1970 which was then followed by Hinten (1971). Guru Guru established themselves as one of the flagships of the krautrock scene with the release of the albums Känguru (1972) – now considered a classic of the krautrock genre - and Guru Guru (1973). After the release of Don’t Call Us, We Call You (1973), the group’s line-up would be fluid throughout the rest of their career with Mani Neumeier remaining the only constant member. With albums such as Dance of the Flames (1974), Tango Fango (1975), Globetrotter (1976) and Hey Du (1979), the group’s music evolved from krautrock to jazz-rock. Guru Guru continued to record regularly for a variety of record labels including Casino, Think Progressive, Cleopatra, Trance, Garden of Delights and In-Akustik. Guru Guru celebrated their 45th Anniversary with a concert that was recorded and filmed and was released in 2014 as 45 Years Live. Subsequent albums include Acid Guru Pond (2016), Rotate! (2018), and Live in China (2020).
