Since 1984, GWAR has specialized in trash metal in the service of cosmic delirium in the form of a destructive rock opera. Formed in Richmond, Virginia, GWAR were initially inspired by punk, before quickly branching out into trashy speed metal, perfectly in tune with their preferred themes. Like Finland's Lordi, GWAR use space monster costumes to personify their wild fantasies. America Must Be Destroyed (1991) remains one of their landmark albums, while 2009's Lust in Space celebrates GWAR's twenty-five years of existence as a band whose stagings oscillate between the grand guignol and an overflowing imagination.
