Handsome Furs are perfect for their unhealthy atmospheres and flaying minimalism. The band - or duo, rather - from Montreal sounds so New York that it seems to have been born somewhere in the Bowery. The gaunt ghosts of Richard Hell and Tom Verlaine brood over 2007's Plague Park, and its successor Face Control, which promises to make 2009 a year of unease and twisted bellies, of stale air breathed in greedily.
