The seven-piece Japanese girl band Happiness are members of a cadre of all-female groups collectively known as E-girls comprised of the bands Dream, Flower and Happiness. The band's history can be traced back to 2008 when five members of what was to become Happiness were performing as a dance group on tour with the popular Japanese boy band Exile. After the tour had finished the group auditioned for additional members prior to releasing their debut single 'Happy Talk' in 2009 and embarking on a promotional tour. The group enjoyed only modest chart success for the first few years of their career and it wasn't until 2013 that they broke into the top ten of the Japanese charts when the single 'Sunshine Dream: Ichido Kiri No Natsu' reached number seven. A string of hits followed and in 2017 they achieved their first number one hit when their single 'Gold' topped the Oricon listings. They are now firmly established as mainstream J-pop performers in Japan.
