Harald Grosskopf is a renowned German musician, composer, and synthesist, best known for his groundbreaking work in electronic music. Born on 23 October 1949 in Hildesheim, West Germany, his career spans several decades, during which he became a key figure in the development of the krautrock, electronica, and ambient genres. He is celebrated for his pioneering use of synthesizers, drums, and other electronic instruments, creating atmospheric soundscapes that blend both experimental and melodic elements. His most notable early work was with the influential German bands Ash Ra Tempel and Wallenstein, where his drumming and electronic contributions were integral to the bands' distinctive sounds. His 1980 solo album Synthesist is considered a landmark in electronic music, a synthesis of ambient, progressive rock, and synthesizer-based experimentation that helped lay the foundation for much of the ambient and new age music that followed. Throughout his career, Harald Grosskopf has collaborated with numerous artists and bands, including Manuel Göttsching, Klaus Schulze, and other notable figures from the German electronic music scene. He has also released a number of solo electronica albums, including 2002's Digital Nomad, 2011's Re-Synthesist, and 2016's Naherholung. In 2025, he worked with Britsh musician and composer Ian Boddy on the Doppelgänger album.
