Hayato Sumino

Japanese pianist and composer Hayato Sumino was born in Yachiyo (Chiba prefecture) on July 14, 1995. Trained on the instrument from the age of three, he went on to study science, obtaining a master's degree at university and taking courses at IRCAM (Paris), with Jean-Marc Luisada. After winning first prize at the PTNA Competition in Japan in 2018, he signed an artist's contract with major Warner Classics, which published his performance in the form of a recital, Passion (2019), consisting of pieces by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov and Scriabin. In 2020, Hayatsom, released on the ePlus Music label, unveils several of his compositions among others by Chopin, Liszt and Saint-Saëns. The following year, in October 2021, Hayato Sumino took part in the 18th Frédéric-Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw, where he reached the semi-finals. In 2022, one of his concerts of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 was released, recorded with the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop. The pianist, also known under the pseudonym Cateen, approaches classical music as he does jazz, pop or anime. He composed the music for the film First Line (2024), before working on the album Human Universe, which, in addition to his new compositions, includes pieces by Bach, Purcell, Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, Chopin, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Hans Zimmer. On its release, the album reached number 16 in the British classical music charts.
