Himanshu Kumar Suri, known as Heems, was born on July 6, 1985, in Queens, New York. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 2003 and later from Wesleyan University with a degree in economics. Suri's early career was in the financial sector before his success in music. Of Punjabi-Indian descent, Heems formed the alternative hip-hop group Das Racist in 2008 with college friend Victor Vazquez (Kool A.D.) and high school friend Ashok Kondabolu. The group gained internet fame with their 2008 song "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" and further acclaim with their 2010 mixtapes. Das Racist split in 2012. Suri released his first solo mixtape, Nehru Jackets, in 2012 through his label, Greedhead Music, followed by Wild Water Kingdom. His debut album, Eat Pray Thug, was released in 2015. Heems is also a co-founder of Swet Shop Boys alongside Riz MC and Redinho. Beyond music, Suri is a board member of SEVA NY, advocating for the South Asian community in Queens, and has been involved in various art and film projects, including a role in Chee and T (2016). He has also curated art exhibitions and participated in documentary and film projects, highlighting his multifaceted career and advocacy work.
