Hiatus Kaiyote

Formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 2011, Hiatus Kaiyote is an ARIA and Grammy-nominated band known for their eclectic blend of R&B, which is influenced by soul, jazz, and hip-hop genres. Consisting of vocalist/guitarist Nai Palm, bassist Paul Bender, drummer Perrin Moss, and keyboardist Simon Mavin, their eclectic debut album, Tawk Tomahawk (2012) featuring the single "Nakamarra" caught the attention of R&B icons Prince and Questlove, which led a deal with Sony Music imprint Flying Buddha. The label reissued Tawk Tomahawk with a revamped version of "Nakamarra" featuring a cameo by Q-Tip, propelling the band to stardom and landing a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance. In 2015, they released their neo-soul sophomore album, Choose Your Weapon, recorded over two years in Australia and the United States. The album reached number 22 in Australia and number 11 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, with the track "Breathing Underwater" garnering a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance. The group continued to gain momentum after Anderson .Paak sampled two songs on his Grammy-nominated album Malibu in 2016, with Kendrick Lamar sampling "Atari" for his gold-certified song "Duckworth" the following year. After a brief hiatus to focus on individual projects, the band reunited for the 2021 album Mood Valiant, which peaked at number 4 in Australia and number 54 in the UK. The album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album in 2022 and won the AIR Award for Best Independent Jazz Album or EP. Hiatus Kaiyote returned in January 2024 with the release of "Everything's Beautiful," the lead single from their fourth studio album, Love Heart Cheat Code, which was released in June 2024.
