Formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 2008, I Fight Dragons is an innovative alt-rock band whose music borrows its chiptune sound from vintage Nintendo games and assorted gaming consoles. The group's debut EP, Cool Is Just a Number, was self-released in 2009 and featured I Fight Dragons' original lineup, including frontman Brian Mazzaferri, guitarist Mike Mentzer, bassist Hari Rao, vocalist Laura Green, drummer Packy Lundholm, and keyboardist Bill Prokopow. I Fight Dragons signed with a subsidiary of Atlantic Records in 2010 and released the sophomore EP Welcome To The Breakdown that November, followed by the full-length KABOOM! in October 2011. KABOOM! marked the group's final release with a label, and I Fight Dragons reclaimed its independent status for the demo collection DEMOlition - 12 Demos That Didn't Make KABOOM! in 2013, as well as the full-length concept album The Near Future in 2014. The Near Future was a success by independent standards, climbing to Number 32 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart and Number 5 on the Billboard Vinyl Albums chart. Canon Eyes followed in 2019, having been partially funded by the band's ongoing Patreon campaign. Meanwhile, the group continued to earn accolades for its innovative concerts, which found the musicians mixing traditional instrumentation like guitars and keyboards with digital sounds sourced from the Game Boy, the Power Glove, the power pad, and other Nintendo products.
