iamnotshane is the alias of American pop singer Shane Niemi. He was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 2, 1995, and began writing his own music at 12 years old. "Sinister," his debut single, was released in 2014 under the name "Shane," followed two years later by the follow-up single "Insecure." Accompanied by a music video that featured dance moves borrowed from Michael Jackson, "Insecure" went viral, earning more than six million views and increasing the buzz around Niemi's debut EP, Sad. A collection of bedroom recordings, Sad was followed a string of stand-alone singles like "Losers" and "Play Good Music at My Funeral." Niemi later adopted the moniker iamnotshane and briefly signed with Island Records. The label released his second EP, the self-titled iamnotshane, in February 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic dashed any hopes of touring behind the record's arrival. iamnotshane used the downtime to work on new music, and he released songs like "What a Perfect Day for Crying" and "I'm Leaving, Sorry for Your Loss" as the year went on. His first full-length album, One Less Year Alive, was released in 2021 by Niemi's own label, Chasing the Wind Music. He released the one-off singles "Punch Me in the Face" and "Don't Say That" later that year, then returned in 2022 with "Maybe My Soulmate Died," a viral hit that also charted in Malaysia and Thailand. Many of those singles reappeared on his sophomore album, Chasing the Wind, in early 2024.
