Born to humble beginnings in Hounslow, London, Jay Sean has become one of the most successful artists ever to merge his traditional roots with a modern, urban music scene. He began rapping at the age of 11, but soon switched to the R&B style, which was more accepting to his ethnicity. His first chart success came in 2003 whilst a member of the Asian underground Rishi Rich Project, and as a result Virgin Records offered him a deal as a solo artist. Jay Sean achieved two Top 10 hits whilst signed to Virgin's Relentless Records - Eyes On You which reached Number 6 and Stolen which rose to Number 4 - and continued to bring together the genres of R&B and bhangra with his involvement in the Rishi Rich Project. His first album Me Against Myself had limited success in the UK, but sold over two million copies in the US, causing him to focus his attentions there. Jay Sean left Virgin in 2006 and set up his own label, Jayded Records. In 2008 he re-emerged on the UK scene with the single Ride It, which peaked at Number 11 in the UK charts. And the 2009 single Down was the most successful single ever by an Asian artist in America, topping the Billboard 100. In 2009 he signed to Cash Money Records.
