JID is the stage name of rapper Destin Choice Route, who launched his career with a string of gold-certified hip-hop singles during the late 2010s. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 31, 1990, he played two seasons of NCAA Division I football as a college student in Virginia before releasing his debut mixtape, Cakewalk, in 2010. That same year, he teamed up with members of Earthgang to form the hip-hop collective Spillage Village. JID spent the first half of the 2010s releasing mixtapes as a solo artist and collaborating with his Spillage Village partners on albums like 2014's Bears Like This, then signed with Dreamville Records as a solo artist in 2017. The Never Story, his solo debut, was released that same year and spawned a gold-selling single, "Never." DiCaprio 2 followed in 2018, peaked at Number 41 on Billboard 200, and produced another pair of gold-certified hits with "151 Rum" and "Off Deez." One year later, he appeared on the Dreamville compilation Revenge of the Dreamers III, which rose to Number 1 on both the Billboard 200 and the Top Rap Albums chart. Revenge of the Dreamers III featured JID on the track "Down Bad," which received a Grammy Award nomination for "Best Rap Performance," as well as the platinum-selling single "Costa Rica," which hit Number 30 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. After collaborating with Imagine Dragons on the 2021 single "Enemy," he earned another Top 40 hit on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart with 2022's "Surround Sound," his first release from the album The Forever Story.
