Singer-songwriter Joan Wasser adopted the name Joan As Police Woman for solo performances and recordings in 2006, inspired by the television crime series Police Woman starring Angie Dickinson. Born in Biddeford, Maine on 26 July 1970, she was adopted as a child and grew up in Connecticut where she learned to play the violin. She studied at Boston University's College of Fine Arts and performed with the Boston University Symphony Orchestra. She joined up with The Dambuilders and began to make a name for herself. After the death of her boyfriend, singer Jeff Buckley in 1997, she played with his band as Black Beetle and then joined Antony and the Johnsons. She has recorded with artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Sheryl Crow and The Guillemots. Her solo releases include Real Life (2006), To Survive (2008), The Deep Field (2011), The Classic (2014), Let It Be You (2016), Damned Devotion (2018), and Cover Two (2020). In 2021, she joined forces with Tony Allen and Dave Okumu for The Solution Is Restless. Her next solo album, Lemons, Limes and Orchids, emerged in 2024 via PIAS.
