Washington, D.C. indie art-rockers Jonathan Fire*Eater met at high school and formed from the ashes of childhood band The Ignobles in 1993. The lineup of Stewart Lupton (vocals), Tom Frank (bass), Paul Maroon (guitar and pedal steel), Matt Barrick (drums), and Walter Martin (organs, keyboards), set about writing songs after moving to college (mostly in New York), and two years later released their eponymous debut on Tucson, Arizona's Third World Underground Records. The five-song mini-album, Tremble Under Boom Lights – written while the band were living in a farmhouse in Ithaca, New York – emerged in 1996. In 1997, the band became one of the first signings to David Geffen's DreamWorks Records, with their second LP Wolf Songs For Lambs released by the label that year. Jonathan Fire*Eater were on the cusp of joining the NYC indie explosion of the 2000s, but split up in 1998, playing their last show at the Central Park bandshell on July 28. Maroon, Barrick, and Martin went on to launch the critically acclaimed indie-rock band The Walkmen, with Martin also enjoying a successful solo career. Lupton died on May 27, 2018 at the age of 43. In 2019, Tremble Under Boom Lights was reissued along with bonus tracks and unreleased material.
