Jordi Bonell

Born in Barcelona on March 3, 1958, Jordi Bonell i Dayá, better known by his stage name Jordi Bonell, studied piano and guitar at the Liceu Conservatory, before continuing his training with Jim Hall at the New School for Social Research in New York. In the mid-1970s, together with Gato Pérez, he formed the progressive rock and jazz fusion group Secta Sònica, which produced two albums, before joining Música Urbana, where he met keyboardist Joan Albert Amargós, with whom he collaborated on other projects. In 1987, he took part in the album U by the short-lived supergroup Bocanegra, alongside Víctor Bocanegra, Pepe Sales and others. In addition to sessions for artists such as Miguel Bosé, Joan Manuel Serrat, Lola Flores, Miquel Pujadó, Sergio Dalma, Guillermina Motta and Marina Rossell, the Catalan guitarist produced the solo albums Azúcar Imaginario (1988), Àngel (1998), Corda Brava (2002), Agua Madre (2003) and Duo, with Dani Pérez (2004). He collaborates with the Italo Boggio Trio for A Volver Nunca Se Nueve (2005) and with Carles Benavent, his former partner in Música Urbana, for Jazz à l'Estudi (2011). In 2016, he released Coral Pulse, followed by Musica Cordis (2024), his last album with Jordi Farrés. Twice awarded by the Associació de Músics de Jazz de Catalunya (1993, 1994), Jordi Bonell taught guitar at Barcelona's Taller de Músics. He died on November 18, 2024, at the age of 66.
