Jordi Savall

Born Jordi Savall i Bernadet on August 1, 1941, in Barcelona, Spain, Jordi Savall is a highly acclaimed conductor and viol player who has won an international reputation with a large catalog of mostly Renaissance, Baroque, and medieval music. A major figure in his native Catalonia, he established his own record label, AliaVox, which produces releases combining recordings and educational booklets that explore the music and its cultural relevance. He played music as a child and studied at the Barcelona Conservatory of Music and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland. With his late wife, soprano Montserrat Figueras, and Lorenzo Alpert and Hopkinson Smith, he formed what became Hespèrion XXI playing early music and later established choral groups La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Le Concert des Nations, playing mostly Baroque music. He garnered attention with his soundtrack for French director Alain Corneau's period feature film Tous les Matins du Monde, which was nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Foreign Language Film and won seven Cesar Awards in France including Best Picture and Best Music in 1992. He has scored several other movies including Long Twilight (1997) and Secret Defense (1998). Jordi Savall’s music can be heard in many other films including Personal Shopper (2016) and Martin Scorsese's Silence (2016). Jordi Savall has had six releases on Billboard's Classical Albums Chart, three in 2009: Ministriles Reales (Number 41), Invocation a la Nuit: Musica Notturna (Number 49), and The Celtic Viol (Number 32). He also had two charting albums in 2010: Istanbul (Number 36) and El Nuevo Mundo: Folias Criollas (Number 49). Jordi Savall has won one Grammy Award with five other nominations, three for Best Small Ensemble Performance, one for Best Opera Recording, and one for Best Classical Compendium. Other albums in his catalog include Haydn: Die Schöpfung (2021), Beethoven: Révolution - Symphonies 6 à 9 (2022), and Gluck: Don Juan – Semiramis (2022).
