Joseph d'Anvers

Joseph d'Anvers, born August 7, 1976 in Nevers, is a versatile French artist, combining the talents of singer-songwriter and writer. After studying applied arts in his hometown, he trained in cinema, working as a cinematographer on various films. At the same time, he is active on the music scene, notably with the groups Polagirl and Super 84. An operation on a vocal polyp in 2004 changed his singing style and led him to write solo songs under the pseudonym Joseph d'Anvers, a name inspired by the Paris metro station Anvers. His talent was soon recognized, and he was awarded a FAIR grant. In 2006, he signed with the Atmosphériques label and released his first album, Les Choses en Face, a folk project produced with Jean-Louis Piérot. The album, recorded in Brussels, includes a duet with Miossec. He performs as an opening act for several well-known artists, and begins writing for others, notably Alain Bashung, for whom he composes "Tant de nuits" on the Bleu pétrole album. He also wrote for Dick Rivers, composing the entirety of his album L'Homme sans Âge. In 2008, he recorded his second album, Les Jours Sauvages, in Rio de Janeiro with musicians from the Brazilian electro-rock scene. The project was nominated for the Prix Constantin. Parallel to his musical career, he writes his first noir novel, La Nuit Ne Viendra Jamais. His third album, Rouge Fer, is released in 2011 and features contributions from Troy Von Balthazar (ex-Chokebore) and Darrell Thorpe. The project received critical acclaim and was followed by a major tour. In 2012, he created Dead Boys, a hybrid show combining music and literature. Two years later, he developed Les Matins Blancs, an album marked by collaboration with artists such as Miossec and Dominique A. In 2015, he teamed up with cartoonist Stéphane Perger to create Les Jours Incandescents, a graphic work inspired by his songs. In late 2018, his track "Ma peau va te plaire" appeared on Alain Bashung's posthumous album, En Amont. In 2020, he publishes a second novel, Juste une Balle Perdue, to rave reviews, and composes the soundtrack for the play Jellyfish. The same year, he founds the Doppelgänger label and releases a new album of the same name, marking a new stage in his career as an artist-producer. In 2022, he was selected for a residency at the Villa Albertine in New Orleans. His third novel, Un garçon Ordinaire, is published in 2023.
