The rapper and hip-hop artist Juicy J was born Jordan Michael Houston in Memphis, Tennessee in 1975. He was a founding member of the southern hip-hop trio Three 6 Mafia who shot to fame after their track 'It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp' was featured as the theme song to the cult 2005 movie 'Hustle and Flow'. When the song was nominated for an Academy Award the actors declined to perform the song in order to allow the writers DJ Paul, Juicy J and Frayser Boy to receive full credit for their writing and performing. The trio performed the song and it won the award. Whilst performing with Three 6 Mafia, Houston was also developing his solo career and after 2011 he left the group to concentrate on writing and producing. Although his work as a solo artist has never quite reached the popularity he enjoyed as a member of Three 6 Mafia, Houston remains an important and influential personality within the world of hip-hop.
