Julian Marley (born 4 June 1975), son of reggae icon Bob Marley, has been carrying on his father's musical legacy since the late 1980s, infusing his own music with roots reggae vibes and Rastafarian spirituality. Born in London and raised between England and the Caribbean, Julian was only five when his father passed away. Despite his young age, he had already recorded his first song and began teaching himself guitar, drums, and keyboards. Influenced by his father's former bandmates in The Wailers, Julian fully embraced Rastafarian teachings at age 12, following the tragic murder of drummer Carlton Barrett in 1987. At 17, he settled in Jamaica, co-founding the Ghetto Youths Foundation with his brothers to support underprivileged children. Julian formed his own group, The Uprising, and toured the US with his brothers before releasing his debut album, Lion in the Morning, in 1996. He later performed at Lollapalooza, collaborating with notable artists such as Lauryn Hill. His second album, A Time & Place (2003), maintained his reggae roots while exploring jazzy and soulful elements. In 2005, he participated in the historic Africa Unite event in Ethiopia and performed at the Beijing Olympics. Marley's third album, Awake (2009), featuring collaborations with his brothers and rapper Mr. Cheeks, received critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination. After a ten-year hiatus, he returned with As I Am (2019), featuring collaborations with Shaggy and Beenie Man, and Colours of Royal in 2023, preceded by single “Made for Your Love” (featuring Alexx Antaeus). The album earned Marley the Best Reggae Album at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
