Her contributions extend beyond performance; she has composed music for theatre productions and served as a presenter for BBC Radio 3's Music Planet. In 2013, she formed the ensemble The Side, blending classical and folk elements, and later established The Darkening, a band that explores the ancient sounds of Northumbria. Their debut album received critical acclaim for its innovative approach to traditional music. Her dedication to music and culture has earned her several accolades, including the appointment as Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and the Queen's Medal for Music, recognizing her outstanding contribution to British music. A reimagining of her 1984 debut, titled Return to Kielderside, was released in 2024.
