After growing up in isolation in a Jehovah's Witness family in North Carolina, Kelsey Lu McJunkins decided to take her destiny into her own hands at the age of 18 and put to good use her taste and talent for music, cultivated since the age of 6. Joining a school to work on her instrument of choice, the cello, she also studied singing and drew on a wealth of experience, including her participation in the Southern rap group Nappy Roots and the multi-disciplinary artistic collective HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN. Now living in Brooklyn, she decided in 2016 to produce her first EP, recording six songs performed on vocals and cello. The EP, entitled Church because it was recorded live in a Williamsburg church, was released in 2016 on the True Panther label.
