Kimya Dawson

Born on 17 November 1972 in Bedford Hills, New York, Kimya Dawson is a pioneering figure in the anti-folk movement, known for her raw, quirky, and deeply personal music that blends folk sensibilities with punk ethos. Rising to prominence in the early 2000s as one-half of the indie duo the Moldy Peaches alongside Adam Green, she became a defining voice for a generation of outsiders and DIY artists. Her solo work, characterized by simple acoustic arrangements and candid, often poetic lyrics, resonates with themes of vulnerability, resilience, and self-discovery. She released her debut album I'm Sorry That Sometimes I'm Mean in 2002 and another six full-length albums followed, including fourth LP Hidden Vagenda in 2004. Her breakthrough came with the inclusion of several of her Moldy Peaches songs on the soundtrack of the 2007 film Juno, which brought her heartfelt, offbeat style to a wider audience. Songs like "Anyone Else But You" and "Loose Lips" showcased her signature blend of whimsy and emotional honesty, connecting with listeners across genres. Through her music, Kimya Dawson has remained a beloved figure in the indie scene, championing authenticity and proving that sometimes the most powerful art comes from the heart. In 2023, she shared a cover of Daniel Johnston's "Follow That Dream."
