Klaus Nomi (* January 24, 1944 in Immenstadt im Allgäu; † August 6, 1983 in New York) is a countertenor from Germany who was successful in the field of pop music. Born Klaus Sperber, he has been interested in music, especially opera, since childhood. Inspired by his singing talent, Klaus Nomi began training as an opera singer in Berlin. He also worked as an usher at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. In 1973, the artist moved to New York. There he began training as a countertenor. Klaus Nomi came to the attention of David Bowie in 1978. In 1979, he hired him as a backing singer for an appearance on the US TV show Saturday Night Live. This gave Klaus Nomi his first recording contract. In 1980, Klaus Nomi released the single "Keys of Life". Musically, the singer moves between Dada and New Wave. This was followed by the albums Klaus Nomi (1981) and Simple Man (1982). TV appearances in Germany also raise his profile in Europe. In November 1983, his interpretation of the "Cold Song" was used as background music for the French film Auf das, was wir lieben. Klaus Nomi doesn't get any more of this. He died of an HIV infection in August 1983. After his death, the album Encore (1983) is released with some unreleased songs.
