Formed in 2016, five-piece Congolese band KOKOKO! play a mix of party-electro (or “tekno kintueni”) utilizing a DIY approach to their music and instrumentation. Working closely with French musician Débruit and currently signed to Transgressive Records, the band have made a name for themselves with their Congolese kintueni sound influenced by the burgeoning music scene of the Ngwaka area in Kinshasa. Creating sounds from everyday appliances such as typewriters or cassette players, KOKOKO! released their debut album, Fongola, in 2019 after a string of earlier EPs and singles. Featuring Makala Bianc on vocals (as well as Makara Bianko and his dancers), the band spent much of 2019 touring the U.S. and Europe for the very first time which culminated in a Tiny Desk Concert at the NPR headquarters in Washington, D.C. Sporting their signature yellow jumpsuits the band have also played South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas. Their energetic live show was also captured in the music video for the 2019 single, Tokoliana. A remix EP featuring remixes from Citizen Boy, TLC Fam, and DJ Marfox was also released in June 2018.
