A popular figure in Japan's kawaii and decora cultures, singer, model and television personality Kiriko Takemura, better known by her stage name Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, rose to international fame in the 2010s through a combination of EDM-infused J-pop songs and sheer viral content. Born in Tokyo on January 29, 1993, she began her professional career as a model for the Harajuku fashion magazines Kera! and Zipper, and later made her debut as a singer after meeting producer Yasutaka Nakata (of Capsule fame) at a fashion event. Included in her first EP Moshi Moshi Harajuku (2011), her debut single "PONPONPON" went viral on YouTube and climbed to Number 9 on the Japanese Hot 100 chart, turning Kyary Pamyu Pamyu into a global pop sensation almost overnight. Released in 2012, her studio debut Pamyu Pamyu Revolution peaked at Number 2 on the Oricon charts and found the singer embarking on her first international tour throughout North America, Europe, and South East Asia. Subsequent releases like Nanda Collection (2013) and Pika Pika Fantajin (2014) confirmed her status as an international cultural juggernaut, reaching Number 1 in Japan and cracking the Top 10 of Billboard's World Music chart. Her winning streak carried into 2016 with the release of the compilation KPP Best, which featured the single "Cherrybonbon." Following an appearance on Charli XCX's 2017 single "Crazy Crazy," Kyary Pamyu Pamyu resumed her solo career with the LP Japamyu (2018), her last outing for Warner Music Japan. Candy Racer, her fifth studio album, appeared in 2021.
