Born in 1986 in Barranquilla, Colombia, songwriter Lido Pimienta later moved to Canada, where her multi-genre blend of electronic pop, Afro-Colombian music, and Latin influences helped her win the country's prestigious Polaris Music Prize in 2017. She was raised in Colombia by a multi-ethnic family and began singing in punk bands as a teenager, before immigrating to Canada to join her mother in the early 2000s. Settling in Toronto, Lido Pimienta married producer Michael Ramey and began working on her 2010 debut album, Color, which was produced by her husband. The two later split up, and Lido Pimienta self-produced her follow-up album during a series of home recordings. Independently released in 2016, La Pepssa became a critical success, winning the 2017 Polaris Music Prize and establishing Lido Pimienta as one of Canada's most promising exports. She also appeared on A Tribe Called Red's We Are The Halluci Nation, which peaked at Number 7 on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums and received its own Polaris Prize nomination. After signing with the American label ANTI-, Lido Pimienta began making periodic trips to a rural village in Colombia. Her third album, Miss Colombia, was released in 2020 and billed as a love letter to her home country, featuring songs recorded in both Toronto and Colombia. It, too, received a nomination for the Polaris Music Prize, as well as a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.
