Montero Lamar Hill (April 9, 1999), who goes by the name Lil Nas X, is an American rapper who garnered attention on social media while tweeting with the username NasMaraj, derived from Nicki Minaj's real name and rapper Nas. In 2018, he started uploading tracks to streaming platforms and released a mixtape titled Nasarati. In 2019, the country rap number “Old Town Road” topped the Billboard Hot 100 and the Streaming Songs chart. It also landed on the Hot R&B Hip-Hop Songs chart at Number 36 and the Hot Country Songs chart at Number 19, however, Billboard took the controversial decision to remove it from the latter stating that it "does not embrace enough elements of today's country music to chart in its current version". It was during this time that Lil Nas X came out as gay, becoming the first artist to ever do so while having a Number 1 song on the charts. After signing with Columbia Records, he dropped his debut EP 7 in June 2019, which debuted at Number 2 on the Billboard 200. This success was followed by performances alongside country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, who had previously featured in a remix of “Old Town Road,” at the BET Awards and the UK’s Glastonbury Festival. During 2020, Lil Nas X released the singles “Rodeo” featuring Cardi B and Nas, and “Holiday,” which peaked at Number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100. Preceded by the chart-topping single “Montero (Call Me by Your Name),” his highly anticipated studio debut Montero saw the light in 2021, reaching Number 2 on both the Billboard 200 and the Official UK Singles Chart.
