Lords of the Underground

Lords of the Underground (often abbreviated as L.O.T.U.G.) are an influential East Coast hip-hop trio that emerged from Newark, New Jersey in the early 1990s. Comprising members Mr. Funke (Dupré Kelly), DoItAll (Dupree "DoItAll" Kelly), and producer, DJ Lord Jazz (Bruce Colston), the group are celebrated for their energetic delivery, clever wordplay, and socially conscious lyrics, which have left an indelible mark on the hip-hop landscape. Formed in 1990 while the members were attending Shaw University in North Carolina, Lords of the Underground quickly gained recognition for their unique style and dynamic live performances. Their debut single, "Psycho," arrived in 1992 and gave the group a minor hit on the Hop Rap Singles chart, where it reached number 17. Their debut album Here Come the Lords (1993), produced by the legendary Marley Marl and K-Def, was a critical and commercial success. The LP spawned several hit singles, including "Chief Rocka," "Funky Child," and "Here Come the Lords," each of which showcased the group's infectious energy and lyrical prowess. "Chief Rocka," in particular, became an anthem within the hip-hop community, known for its catchy hook and memorable verses. The success of their debut album established Lords of the Underground as a formidable force in the hip-hop world, earning them the title of Best Rap Group at the 1993 BET Hip Hop Awards. Their sophomore effort, Keepers of the Funk (1994), continued to build on their success, featuring production from Marley Marl and guest appearances from high-calibre artists like George Clinton. The record further solidified their reputation for crafting innovative and thought-provoking music, with standout tracks such as "Tic Toc" and "What I'm After." They have since dropped three more full-lengths: Resurrection (1999), House of Lords (2007) and 2020's So Legendary. Over the years, Lords of the Underground have maintained a loyal fanbase, thanks to their consistent touring and commitment to preserving the essence of true hip-hop. They have continued to release music that resonates with both old-school fans and new listeners, demonstrating their enduring appeal and relevance in the ever-evolving hip-hop scene.
