The French band Los Niños de Sara is made up of four Gypsy cousins. Antonio Contreras (also known as Tonio) handles the lead vocals and plays guitar, Santiago Lorente (also known as “Santi”) and Ramón Compas provide vocals and also play guitar, and Coco handles the drumming duties, and all of them had been playing professionally since they were children. They rose to fame when they joined forces with Israeli singer Ishtar to form Alabina, a cross-cultural world-music success. When Ishtar started a solo career, the cousins began recording their material under their own name. Their debut album, 2001’s La Cubanita, displayed their unique fusion of Cuban and Flamenco sounds and was made with the help of Michael Sembello of “Maniac” fame. Many have described theiri sound as Gipsy Kings crossed with Buena Vista Social Club, and 2003’s Gipsyole did little to change that perception. They followed with España Tiene Sabor in 2006.
