Lou Donaldson

Lou Donaldson is an American soul and jazz alto saxophonist who learned to play music while doing military service during World War II. He went on to have a long career performing and recording with artists such as band leader Art Blakey, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and pianist Thelonious Monk. He also recorded with pianist Horace Silver, trumpeter Clifford Brown and drummer Philly Joe Jones. He has a huge catalogue of recordings starting with 'New Faces New Sounds' in 1952. 'Alligator Boogaloo' (1967) went to number 15 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart, 'Mr. Shing-A-Ling' (1968) went to number 44, 'Midnight Creeper' (1968) reached number 45, 'Say It Loud!' (1969) number 27, 'Hot Dog' (1969) number 35, 'Everything I Play Is Funky' (1970) number 39, 'Sassy Soul Strut' (1973) number 49 and 'Sweet Lou' (1974) number 44. Well-known tracks include 'Alligator Boogaloo' and 'Blues Walk'. He toured regularly, performing at Ronnie Scott's jazz club in London in 2012 when he was 85. He performed at the Newport Jazz Festival in America in 2015.
