Swedish R&B performer Maher Zain is actually of Lebanese origin having been born in Tripoli in 1981. He is a devout muslim and a champion of Palestinian rights and through his use of social media has built up a huge online following in Islamic countries and among Arabic speaking audiences. Zain started out his musical career in the US but upon a return to Sweden he reaffirmed his connection with Islam and began recording songs with a distinct religious note. His debut album 'Thank You Allah' was released in 2009 and was certified multiple platinum following its success, particularly in the Malaysian market. The album contains a track titled 'The Chosen One' and the accompanying music video has garnered over seven million YouTube views. Despite his success in Arabic speaking territories Zain sings primarily in English but has also released French, Turkish, Arabic, Malay and Indonesian versions of his songs. As well as his singing career Zain has been involved in acting and has appeared in the hugely successful Indonesian TV drama 'Insya-Allah'.
