Mantar

Founded in Hamburg in 2011, Mantar is a sludge metal duo formed by long-time friends and musicians Erinç Sakarya (drums) and Hanno Klänhard (guitar, vocals). Initially influenced by Motörhead, Darkthrone and Melvins, the duo has been praised for their black metal sound, despite the absence of additional band members or instruments. Releasing their debut studio album Death by Burning in 2014, the band’s raw, power-filled recordings attracted an instant following and in 2016, they signed to metal label Nuclear Blast, refining their style and releasing the highly anticipated album Ode to the Flame, peaking at number 7 on the GfK Entertainment Charts. Two years later, the band released The Modern Art of Setting Ablaze on August 24, 2018, known for its controversial album artwork, which included the Nazi-inspired sculpture Der Lichtbringer; Klänhard and Sakarya aiming to bring their country’s dark history into focus, imploring fans to think and live for themselves. In April 2020, the duo released cover album Grungetown Hooligans II, arranging tracks from artists that originally inspired them, particularly The Jesus Lizard, Mudhoney and Sonic Youth. The negative influence of COVID-19 almost caused the band to break up, however on July 15, 2022, they released their highly successful post-pandemic album Pain Is Forever and This Is the End, peaking at number 2 on the charts.
