Marc Johnson

Marc Johnson is an American jazz double-bass player from Nebraska who began performing while at university in Texas and became a member of Bill Evans's final trio from 1978 until the pianist's death in 1980. Several archived recordings with the trio have been released since including 'Live in Montreal 1980' in 2019. He has released several albums as leader and recorded with a great many top jazz artists including his wife, singer-pianist Eliane Elias. Their 2012 recording 'Swept Away' reached number 19 on Billboard's Jazz Albums chart in 2012 and 'Made in Brazil' won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2015. His debut release, 'Bass Desires', came out in 1986 followed by 'Second Sight' (1987), 'Two By Four' (1989), 'Right Brain Patrol' (1992) and 'Magic Labyrinth' (1995). 'The Sound of Summer Running' (1997) went to number 13 on Billboard's Jazz Albums chart and he followed with 'If Trees Could Fly' (1998) and 'Shades of Jade' (2005). Other jazz collaborators include Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, American guitarists John Abercrombie, Jimmy Gourley, Pat Martino and John Scofield; American pianists Andy LaVerne, John Lewis and Lyle Mays; American drummer Peter Erskine, American saxophonist Stan Getz, American bandleader Woody Herman, Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel and Belgian guitarist and harmonica player Toots Thielemans.
