Marek Janowski is a Polish conductor who has led orchestras in many European cities and Pittsburgh in the United States. His recordings include Johannes Brahms' four symphonies and Richard Wagner's 'Ring Cycle' as well as works by Richard Strauss and Carl Maria von Weber. Born in Warsaw, he grew up in the town of Wuppertal near Cologne in Germany after his father disappeared during World War II. After a stint as music director at Freiberg, in 1973 Janowski took charge of the Dortmunder Philharmoniker at the Dortmund Opera and became music director of Cologne's Gürzenich Orchestra. He was named music director of what is now the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in 1984 and continued to hold that position until 2000. His other commitments included serving with the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic, the Berlin Radio Symphony, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Pittsburgh Symphony. His many recordings include an album of Krysztof Penderecki's 'The Devils of Loudun' with the Hamburg State Orchestra with whom he had debuted the work in concert in 1969.
