Maria Tipo

Maria Tipo, born in Naples on December 23, 1931, began playing the piano at an early age under the influence of her mother, herself a pupil of Ferruccio Busoni. She gave her first concert at the age of 4 and trained with Alfredo Casella and Guido Agosti. At 17, she won the Geneva Competition (1949), then third prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition (1952). Spotted by Arthur Rubinstein, she embarked on a brilliant international career, playing with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1956, her recording of the Scarlatti Sonatas became a cult hit. She also made her mark with Bach's Goldberg Variations and works by Clementi. At the same time, she taught at the conservatories of Bolzano, Florence and Geneva. After giving up performing in 1995 to devote herself to teaching, Maria Tipo died in Florence on February 10, 2025, aged 93.
