The daughter of folk legends Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle and brother of singer Rufus Wainwright, Martha has blossomed into a candid songwriter with a wicked turn of phrase and a husky purr. First coming to attention by singing backing vocals for her family members, the Canadian independently released a number of early EPs before debut album Martha Wainwright (2005) produced the singles When The Day Is Short and Factory and brought a heap of critical acclaim. She sang on Snow Patrol's hit Set The Fire To The Third Bar and recruited Pete Townshend, Donald Fagen (Steely Dan) and Garth Hudson (The Band) to feature on second album I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too (2008). Martha covered the songs Traitor and Tower Of Song for the film Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man and paid tribute to her hero Edith Piaf on the live album Sans Fusils, Nils Souliers, A Paris (2009); but it is the honesty and sharp-tongued wit of her own work that make her one of Canada's brightest stars.
