Martin Stevens – born Roger Prud’homme on October 3, 1953, in Verdun, Quebec, Canada – was a pop singer best known for his popular singles and albums released during the disco era. He began his musical career in 1975 with the release of several French-language singles including “Anikana – O” (1975), “Sans Ton Amour” (1975), “Mal” (1976), “J’aime La Musique (Comme Un Fou)” (1976), and “Sha La La Encoure Une Fois” (1977). He came to prominence in 1978 when he released his French-language self-titled debut album, which featured his cover of “Love Is in the Air,” which had been written by Harry Vanda & George Young (The Easybeats / Flash and the Pan). The song was released as a single and began climbing the charts, reaching number 21 before it was stopped in its tracks when John Paul Young released his version of the song, which became an international hit. Martin Stevens’ version of “Love Is in the Air” was nominated for a Juno Award for Best Selling Single in 1979. His second album, Midnight Music, was released in 1979 and featured the title track, which was a hit single and was nominated for Best Selling Single at the 1980 Juno Awards. After several non-album singles in the early 1980s, Martin Stevens drifted out of the music business, eventually writing an autobiography, Sexe, drogue et disco, in 2007. Martin Stevens died on July 5, 2023, at the age of 69.
