Matthew Halsall

Born in Manchester, England on September 11, 1983, Matthew Halsall is a jazz trumpeter, composer, producer, DJ, and label owner, having founded Gondwana Records in 2008. Halsall’s playing style is influenced by classic 1960s British jazz and transcendental, spiritual, and modal artists such as Pharoah Sanders, Miles Davis, and Alice Coltrane. He founded his own label, Gondwana Records, and released his debut album, Sending My Love, in 2008. He followed that up with his sophomore release Colour Yes (2009). Matthew Halsall’s third album, On the Go (2011), was a huge success, earning Gilles Peterson Worldwide Winners Award and a nomination for Best Jazz Act at the 2011 MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards. His 2012 album, Fletcher Moss Park, was followed by two albums credited to Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchestra: When the World Was One (2014) and Into Forever (2015). In 2017, he collaborated with vocalist Dwight Trible on the album Inspirations. Matthew Halsall’s album Oneness was released in 2019 followed by Salute to the Sun (2020). Three years after the release of Salute to the Sun, he released An Ever Changing View (203), which found him experimenting more and delving even further into deeply meditative music. Alongside his own releases, his Gondwana label has issued albums by Portico Quartet, GoGo Penguin, Bonobo, and others.
