Starting out as the guitarist of controversial German punk band Böhse Onkelz in 1981, Frankfurt-raised Matthias "Gonzo" Röhr (born 16 April 1962) embarked on a solo career following the band's split in 2005. He journeyed to Brazil and the US to record his 2007 debut as Matt Roehr, Barra da Tijuca, expanding on his punk rock foundations to bring funk, blues, and jazz into his sound. 2010's Out of the Great Depression came next, then 2011's Blitz & Donner followed, and then 2013's Zuflucht vor dem Sturm, with all albums released under the Matt Roehr moniker, which he maintained until 2014. He made his return to music with a new album in 2022, Dead Slow, released under the Matt Gonzo Roehr name.
