MC Marcinho

MC Marcinho is the stage name of Márcio André Nepomuceno Garcia, a Brazilian singer often credited with pioneering the funk melodia genre. Born on 11 November 1977 in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro, he grew up under the influence of his cabinet maker father's samba renditions. By age 6, he had already migrated to Rio's Bangu neighborhood. Inspired by legends like Roberto Carlos and Tim Maia, Marcinho embarked on a music career that saw him crowned the "Prince of Funk." During the 1990s, his partnership with producer DJ Marlboro bore fruits like the album Porque Te Amo in 1997 and the iconic Sempre Solitário in 1998, which featured "Garota Nota 100" – a track that graced the soundtrack of TV Globo's novela, Vai na Fé. The 2000s brought challenges as funk's landscape shifted towards erotic lyrics, sidelining MC Marcinho's style. However, in 2002, he defied the trend with Falando com as Estrelas, a commercially successful album that introduced hits such as "Funk das Antigas" and "Glamurosa." This song, inspired by TV presenter Xuxa, ushered MC Marcinho back into the limelight. A catastrophic 2006 car accident led to a leg amputation, and subsequent years were marked by health struggles. Despite these setbacks, MC Marcinho continued to record and release music, including the 2011 live DVD Tudo é Festa, recorded at Rio's famed Circo Voador. MC Marcinho succumbed to mounting health complications on 26 August 2023, aged just 45.
