Hailing from Austin, Texas, American singer and musician McKenna Michels made a name for herself in 2021 with the piano-accompanied track "Tired", which already revealed her highly personal songwriting, developing in her lyrics the themes of domestic violence she experienced as a child. Several other songs follow in the same vein, on the Renaissance EP in 2021 or "Survivor", which opens the Enlightenment album (2022), released on the Arching Dog Productions label. After the heartwarming Christmas song "Have Yourself a Merry Christmas" in 2023, "Ghost" follows in the summer of 2024, then "I Don't Know", her fifth track to chart in the Adult Contemporary Top 30.
