American singer and actress Melba Moore was raised in Harlem, New York City and rose to prominence firstly as an actress in the musical 'Hair' playing the character Dionne. She later replaced Dianne Keaton in the role of Sheila and subsequently went on to win a Tony Award for her part in another musical, the Broadway hit 'Purlie'. During this period she also won two major film roles but it is as a singer that most people will remember her. Her solo singing career began in earnest with the release of the 1975 R&B album 'Peach Melba'. The album was critically acclaimed but spawned only one minor hit 'I Am His Lady'. It wasn't until the following year with the release of the single 'This Is It' that Moore hit the big time. The song reached the top 20 in the US and went to number one in the UK, becoming a popular disco track with British audiences. Despite having three number one singles and numerous Grammy Award nominations she has thus far failed to win one of the coveted awards. Her last chart appearance was in 2011 when her single 'Love Is' entered the US R&B Chart at number 87.
