The five musicology students united under the Midlake banner first made a name for themselves in Europe, where their lo-fi, folk-rock sound attracted a loyal following with the albums Bamnan and Slivercork (2004) and, above all, The Trials of Van Occupanther (2006). 2010 saw the release of The Courage of Others, the third and final album with Tim Smith, who was replaced on the mic by Eric Pulido on Antiphon (2013).
