Moloko

Taking their name from a reference in the Anthony Burgess novel A Clockwork Orange, Moloko's melodic dance music was hugely popular on the late 1990s UK club scene and resulted in a couple of major hit singles, notably Sing It Back and The Time Is Now. Mark Brydon was already a well-established dance producer and re-mixer when he met young Irishwoman Róisín Murphy at a party in Sheffield. At the time she had no experience as a singer, but quickly found her feet as their infectious dance style gained them an ardent underground following; leading up to the albums Do You Like My Tight Sweater? (Murphy's introductory comment to Brydon when she first met him) and I Am Not A Doctor. After the track Sing It Back became popular in the influential Ibiza club scene in 1999, Moloko broke into the mainstream with The Time Is Now - from their third album Things To Make And Do - which reached Number 2 in the UK charts and became their biggest hit. Murphy and Brydon split as a couple in 2001, but continued their professional partnership to incorporate the release of a less successful fourth and final album Statues (2002) as they moved away from dance music towards traditional pop. The launch of Róisín Murphy's solo career signalled the end of Moloko.
