Narciso Yepes

One of classical music's greatest guitarists, Spain's Narciso Yepes (1927-1997), is as well known for creating the theme for René Clément's film Jeux interdits (1952) as for his interpretations of the great works of the instrument's repertoire, notably Joaquin Rodrigo's Aranjuez Concerto , which he helped to make better known through his recordings. A virtuoso himself, he has inspired numerous compositions by Joaquin Rodrigo, Salvador Bacarisse, Lleonard Balada, Jean Françaix, Xavier Montsalvatge, Federico Mompou, Maurice Ohana and Bruno Maderna. An eclectic performer, he unearths scores forgotten since the Baroque era (Johann Sebastian Bach's complete works for the lute; Vivaldi, Boccherini, Scarlatti), spotlights Spanish composers (Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega), composes for film and plays flamenco. The creator of a ten-string guitar model (1964), he leaves an important catalog of recorded works.
