Nastiti Karja Dewi (October 18, 1967), better known as Nicky Astria, is an Indonesian singer-songwriter. Born in Bandung, West Java to a school teacher and a musician, Nicky Astria started singing at a very early age and participated in several competitions before deciding to pursue a music career in the early 80s. After signing with AMK Records in 1984, she made her official debut with the full-length Semua Dari Cinta, which was considered a commercial flop at the time. Despite her first album’s poor reception, she came back in full force in 1985 with Jerum Neraka, a more rock-oriented effort that sold over 350,000 copies. Mainstream success followed as 1986’s Tangan Tangan Setan exposed her to a wider audience, cementing her reputation as one of Indonesian rock’s fastest rising stars. In the following decades, Nicky Astria remained at the forefront of Indonesia’s pop rock scene, winning Best Female Rock Singer at the BASF Awards from 1985 to 1987 and delivering a string of classic albums such as 2000’s Samar Bayangan. In 2012, after almost 14 years since her last collection of original songs, she returned with the album Janji, followed by Terus Berlari (2019) and Jerit Anak Manusia (2020).
