Born in Kawasaki, Japan in 1962, Noriko Ogawa is a Japanese-born/London-based classical pianist and not to be confused with the Japanese actress and singer with the same name. She studied at the Tokyo College of Music from 1977 to 1980. After graduating, she then attended the Juilliard School in New York from 1981 until 1985. She came in second place in a Japanese music competition and three years later, earned third place prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition (1987). This performance was the beginning of her international career. Her first album, Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 3, was released in 1989. Noriko Ogawa signed a deal with BIS Records in 1996 and released her second album – and first for BIS – Just for Me: Noriko Ogawa Plays Japanese Piano Music. She began to collaborate with British pianist Kathryn Stott in a piano duo, recording several albums together. She also frequently collaborated with clarinetist Michael Collins. Noriko Ogawa has released over 30 albums including Japonisme (1999), Bridges to Japan (2000), Debussy Piano Music Volume 1 (2001), Satie: Piano Music Vol. 1 (2016), Satie: Piano Music, Vol. 2 (2017), and Satie: Vexations (Piano Music, Vol. 3) (2020).
