Novalima

Novalima is a Peruvian band known for its unique fusion of Afro-Peruvian music with electronic and Latin American beats. The group was founded by four childhood friends, Ramón Perez Prieto, Rafael Morales, Carlos Li Carrillo, and Grimaldo Del Solar, who were spread across the globe in cities like Lima, London, Hong Kong, and Barcelona. Despite the distance, they collaborated to create their debut album Novalima (2003) as well as their second album Afro (2005), the latter of which was released to international acclaim. Afro notably held the number 1 spot on the US College Music Journal Latin Alternative and New World radio charts for ten weeks. Novalima's third album, Coba Coba, released in 2008, earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album. This album delved deeper into the African roots of Afro-Peruvian music, incorporating elements of reggae, dub, salsa, hip-hop, afrobeat, and Cuban son. In 2012, the band suffered the loss of Mangüé Vasquez, a key member who was known as the “soul” of Novalima. The band's fifth album, Planetario, was released in 2015 and received high praise from NPR for its innovative approach. Following this, they explored Andean influences and collaborations with various artists on their sixth album Ch'Usay (2018), which included native Quechua lyrics. Novalima has been continually recognized for its contributions to world music, blending traditional Peruvian styles with modern influences, and has toured globally, playing at prestigious festivals and venues. The group's EP La Danza, Pt. 2 was released in 2023 to much acclaim. It contains the track "Canto del Agua," a collaboration with psychedelic Peruvian band Hit La Rosa.
